Our "Behind the Barn" feature this week highlights Alain Remond of Redview Jerseys located in Kensington, PEI. Alain, who immigrated from France in 1984, has been a lifelong farmer. After farming in Eastern Ontario for 14 years and then in Southern Manitoba, he and his family moved to the Island in 2016 when his daughter Deanna and her husband Rob decided to return to the farm.

Alain farms alongside his wife, Janna, daughter Deanna, and son-in-law Rob, milking 68 Jersey cows. Their farm uses a pipeline milking system in a tie-stall barn, but what sets them apart is their innovative use of a wireless e-fencing system for rotational grazing. This system allows them to pasture graze their cows for four months each year, efficiently utilizing the spring grass growth and providing cows with their preferred types of grass.

Alain’s favorite part of dairy farming is sharing his passion with the next generation, watching his grandchildren develop an interest in the farm. He encourages anyone considering a career in dairy farming to follow their passion and rely on strong family support, as anything is possible with those key elements.
